Why have I not been blogging?

Because of this:

If you have read this series, you know exactly what I mean. I finished the last book late last night and as my sister-in-law said, I am very happy with how it all wrapped up.

Yesterday, I had three people ask me what had happened to my blogging and that is when I had to admit my obsession with these books! When I was buying the third one, Garet said, "This says juvenile" - I know, depressing. When I tried to tell him about the plot, he just kinda looked at me like, what??

Another mom at the kids school told me that her book club was addicted to this site: TwilightMoms. This is crazy, I know, but I can't wait until the movie!!!

Has anyone else fallen victim to these books?

If you are local, I've got the 3rd and 4th book that you can have. I gave my sister-in-law the first two and she finished the whole series in a week!

OK. You have piqued my curiosity. I may have to go out and buy the first two. I love to read! I am glad you are back to blogging. I have missed you.

Yes! All of my group has read them. Wow. I am waiting for my SIL to let me borrow the last one. So...I'm still not sure how it ends. I read two of them at the beach a few weekends ago. I really can't pinpoint why they're so addicting!!!

So THAT Is where you have been...I WAS wondering!

Oh man, I will have to check out those books then. How have not heard of them before if they are so fantastic and addictive? Oh right...my only social group most days is a 2 year old. :) Sigh. And also - my nose is stuck in the Big Book of Birth right now...cringe!

Does this mean you have read the Harry Potter books too? They were addicting.

Hey now, I never would have pegged you for a vampire kind of girl.

How very interesting.

My Mom and my sister-in-law both love these books. After my sister-in-law described it as "My So-Called Life" meets Anne Rice, I had to try it. I read the first one--but have had a hard time getting into the next one. I'll keep trying, though.

I've been wanting to read those (loved vampire books in junior high/early high school) but I haven't been able to make myself as of yet. I'm scared they're going to turn out like the harry potter books (which I hated - loved the movies though). since you like them I might actually give them a try :)

Kimberly: I didn't even know they were about vampires until I started reading them - crazy! The author makes them seem so normal though that you forget what you are reading about.

And Jeremy, I haven't read Harry Potter, but everyone keeps telling me that I need to if I liked Twilight.

I have to add that I am suddenly popular with the teenage crowd now! Ha!

What do you think of this review? I'm troubled by the statements that Bella acts like a sociopath, that true love is based on appearance, that true love is more powerful than a dangerous partner whose strongest urge is to kill you... yikes! Is that the kind of message we want to send?

This review says in part: "A girl falls in love with a good looking face to the point where she's willing to give up all her friends, her family, her life, even her soul. Sounds like an alcoholic or a drug addict." Double yikes!

Peter, you obviously have never been a teenage girl before :).

However, I will agree with a couple of the points in that I did wonder at what age someone should read the books. For someone struggling with self-esteem issues, this is probably not the book for them. For a 30 year old mom, I didn't really think twice about those issues and just enjoyed the surface-level story.

Have you read the book?

Don't get me wrong; books can be fun and interesting even when they endorse or glorify actions that are unwise or immoral. It's scary for me, though, to realize how uncritical I am of what I read. I try to keep my favorite books in the category "things I'm not ashamed to recommend to my mom."

Peter, don't be scared it's just a book about teenage vampires. It's not real!

Peter: If it is any consolation, I told my mom to read them :). I have to agree with Jeremy on this one though, it is really just a teenage love story - full of drama - isn't that how most of us were back then??? Well, maybe not Garet :).

Jeremy, your comment reminds me of a sermon about how multiple innocent actions can lead to unfortunate results. There's nothing wrong with consuming entertaining fiction, but it does affect us. Haven't you ever driven really fast out the parking lot of a movie theater after watching a James Bond film, or felt sad at the end of Old Yeller?

This book does sound like a good way to engage one's teen in developing critical thinking skills.

Alison: I once recommended to my mom a book where the 6 year old protagonist kills a bully by stomping on his head. It's a great book; we can lend you one of our copies if you're interested.
